Welcome to the website of Joanne Wishart. Award winning artist, entrepreneur, mother of twins, tea drinker, lover of colour and life by the sea!

About

Colour, creativity and lots of it! I am a professional artist based in my studio at the Mushroom Works in Newcastle upon Tyne.

I was born in Berwick upon Tweed and grew up in the beautiful Northumbrian countryside. In 2000 I gained a BDes hons in Printed Textile Design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. I started my career as a freelance designer creating Hawaiian shirt print designs for the USA market.

In 2006 together with my husband Ross we set up "Wishart" a self publishing art, print and greetings card company and in 2009 won a female entrepreneur award for the North East of England's, Best Creative Business. Since then we have never looked back. I spend my days in the studio developing ideas and creating work while my husband Ross acts as my agent liaising with galleries and supplying customers with my work, as well as attending most art and craft fairs on my behalf.

We live happily in the fishing port of North Shields with our twin sons Fraser and Finley.

Inspiration

The coastal landscape is the main inspiration for my work, which aims to capture and celebrate happy memories of days out by the seaside. My work incorporates a variety of material including paint, textiles, maps and driftwood. I combine them using painting, printmaking, collage and stitching techniques. Bright colours, layers of texture and splashes of paint all come together to capture the character of my subjects through the development of my sketchbook drawings into colourful and contemporary works of art.

My work is available as original artworks, limited edition prints, and artist greetings cards through this web shop, at exhibitions, through selected outlets and by appointment at my studio. Visitors are welcome, it's just best to make sure I'm in before calling by!

My Studio

This is where the magic happens!  Colouful and messy, a place I don't worry about splashing paint. It is small and works well like an efficient kitchen with my easel paints and workbench positioned around me. There is a large window that floods in natural light essential for painting.

My easel paints and art materials are my basic essentials. I have collections of old maps, driftwood gathered from local beaches and drawers full of papers and fabric scaps. My mums old singer sewing machine, my camera and more recently my Imac are all utilised in the creative process.

The Mushroom Works studios in Newcastle upon Tyne has been my creative home for 10 years now. Where I enjoy being part of a creative hub.
