Illustrating The Allotment Sisterhood – A Wonderful Local Collaboration

One of the greatest joys of being an artist is having the opportunity to collaborate with other creative people, and I was absolutely delighted to work with local author Kay Wilson from East Boldon to create the front cover illustration for her new book, The Allotment Sisterhood.
From our very first conversation, it was clear that this was going to be a special project. The Allotment Sisterhood is a heartwarming story that celebrates friendship, community and the simple pleasures of life, all set against the backdrop of the beloved British allotment. My challenge was to capture that warmth, character and sense of togetherness in a single image.
Creating a book cover is a fascinating process. Unlike a traditional painting, an illustration for a novel needs to invite the reader into the story and give them a glimpse of the world waiting inside its pages. Working closely with Kay, I developed an image that reflected the spirit of the book and the characters who bring it to life.
After 20 years as an artist this was my first ever book cover commission and it was exciting to take on a new challenge. It has been a real privilege to play a small part in bringing The Allotment Sisterhood to readers, and I'm thrilled to see the finished book finally making its way into the world.
The official launch of The Allotment Sisterhood will take place at The Bound Bookshop in Whitley Bay on 15th July, and I'm sure it will be a wonderful celebration of local creativity and storytelling.
I'm also pleased to say that copies of The Allotment Sisterhood are available to purchase in our art gallery, as well as through Amazon and Kindle.
A huge thank you to Kay for inviting me to collaborate on this lovely project. Supporting local authors, artists and independent businesses is something I'm incredibly passionate about, and I can't wait to see readers discover and enjoy this beautiful new book.
If you're in Whitley Bay or visiting the coast this summer, pop into the gallery to see the artwork and pick up a copy of The Allotment Sisterhood.
