Painting Alnwick Castle: A Day of Artistic Inspiration in Northumberland

Posted by Joanne Wishart on

As a North East-based artist, I’m lucky to be surrounded by some of the UK’s most breathtaking landscapes — and few places are as iconic or inspiring as Alnwick Castle. So when I met the lovely team from the Alnwick Castle gift shop at the Northumbrian Tourism Fair, I was thrilled when they invited me to visit the castle to create a series of original paintings.

A Creative Invitation

After chatting at the event, the gift shop team extended a warm invitation for me to explore the castle as a guest, with the idea of capturing its grandeur and atmosphere through my art. The plan? To turn these artworks into a new range of Alnwick Castle greetings cards — available in their shop.

A Day at Alnwick Castle

I spent a full day walking the grounds of this incredible historic site, taking in the ever-changing light and the many angles from which the castle reveals itself. I was especially excited to learn about the landscaped grounds having been created by Capability Brown! From the sweeping views over the spring daffodils towards the towers and battlements to the reflections in the River Aln, every corner offered fresh inspiration. I sketched as I went, gathering ideas and reference material to take back to the studio.

From Sketchbook to Studio

Back in my studio, I used those sketches and memories to develop a series of three original Alnwick Castle paintings. Each one captures a different perspective and mood — from the timeless majesty of the architecture to the soft colours of the surrounding landscape. It was a joy to bring these views to life in my signature colourful, expressive style.

New Alnwick Castle Greetings Cards

I’m delighted to say that these artworks have now been reproduced as a brand-new collection of greetings cards, available at the Alnwick Castle gift shop and online via my website. Whether you're a fan of Northumbrian heritage, a collector of local art, or simply want a special card to send to someone, they make a lovely keepsake from a visit to this stunning location.

Looking for a Print of Alnwick Castle?

If you’d like something bigger and are looking for a print featuring Alnwick Castle then you can find them on my website online at www.joannewishart.co.uk or you can find them stocked in the Brightwater Art Gallery on NarrowGate in Alnwick town centre, just a short walk from the castle.

Art Inspired by Northumberland

Painting Alnwick Castle has been a truly memorable experience, and I’m so grateful to the team for their support and warm welcome. It’s always a privilege to create artwork that celebrates the places we treasure here in the North East — and I hope these pieces bring a little bit of that magic to others, too.

If you’re planning a trip to Alnwick Castle, be sure to pop into the gift shop and take a look!
